Is it missal or missile?

This became a topic of conversation in the Conservatory.  Language and diction is often discussed in the Conservatory as that is part of the training.

As most students that I overheard and some Faculty pointed out:  In the US, most people mispronounce the word missile even though some people defend the mispronunciation and claim there are two ways to pronounce it (roll eyes).  They mispronounce missile the way missal is pronounced.

Missal (MISSAL) is a book containing the texts used in the Catholic Mass throughout the year.  I should point out that this word does not have two ways of pronouncing it, so why does “missile” have two pronunciations, according to some people?

Missile (“MISS-aisle”) is an airborne ranged weapon capable of self-propelled flight aided usually by a propellant, jet engine or rocket motor.  In the EU and UK, most people — unless they’re originally from the US — pronounce missile correctly.

But from my experience, it’s only in the US that missile is pronounced the way missal is pronounced.

One can’t fix stupid, so don’t bother trying.
