Their official title is Representatives and Senators

So when did the politicians in the US House of Representatives — which are officially called “Representative” — start being called “Congressman/woman/person?” What idiot started that?

The Senate is part of the US Congress yet, oddly, Senators are never called “Congressman/woman/person.” No, just the House politicians. This confuses some people because they think that the Senate is not part of the US Congress, that it’s some separate body somewhere like the US Supreme Court.

In fact, some of the Representatives don’t use their official title. They too refer to themselves as “Congressman/woman/person.” Sigh. (roll eyes).

It’s no wonder that people in other countries and even in the US have trouble understanding the US system of governance when “everyone” (politicians, the corporate media and the public) sloppily use the wrong language.
