There are a lot of people who are obsessed with their sexuality, both queer and straight. My friend and I refer to them as The Professional Homosexuals because all they think about it seems is their sexuality and sexual orientation. It’s like a job or employment for them. Although I think this applies more to queers than it does straights because I’ve never had a straight friend or acquaintance say anything to me about “I’m straight” when I’ve gotten together with them for any period of time. Their sexuality was irrelevant.
My neighbour is one of them obsessed with her sexuality. I went to a protest with her and her friend (who is now no longer a friend I was informed). At the end of the day we summed up the day, and my neighbour said, “And you spent the day with two lesbians.” WTF? I didn’t know what to say to that because I had given no thought to that. In my mind, I had spent the day with two people, regardless of their sexuality. I had thought nothing about their being lesbians, nor do I care. But she, being a Professional Homosexual, was obsessed and focused on the fact that she and her (former) friend were lesbians. And that matters how? The protest was not about sexuality.
When I get together with people, I don’t think about their sexuality. I probably already know whether they are straight, queer or bi, but I don’t really care one way or the other and it’s not why we get together.
The Professional Homosexuals; however, take a different approach and seem obsessed with their sexuality 24/7. They talk about gay, gay, gay incessantly. I can’t relate. That takes so much energy that could better be spent on other things.
