Anglicans are not Protestants – Part 2

He agrees with me, I’m surprised.

David McPhee, Ph.D. wrote a post on Quora that agreed with my comments about Anglicans. I’ve said that Anglicans are not Protestants, especially the High Church (Anglo-Catholics). When I was Organist/Choirmaster in a parish that was Low Church, I never heard the word “Protestant” spoken. In fact, the Vicar was slowly making the parish more High Church. Yet many people, including the BBC, use the language “Protestants and Catholics.” Very black and white thinking. That implies that they think Anglicans are Protestants. As I’ve said, I don’t see too many religious groups protesting the Catholic Church these days. In fact, the Catholic and Anglican churches are considered sister churches these days. The Liturgies (Mass) are almost identical.

Someone had asked if Protestants have priests and Dr McPhee responded:

Dr McPhee wrote: “Protestant” covers a ton of territory, but one thing they don’t have a lot of is “priests” of any sex. Well, maybe you think of Episcopalians and Anglicans as “Protestants,” but technically they aren’t, it’s complicated, but they definitely do have women priests, bishops too, have had them for a generation or two.

It’s true that most Protestants don’t refer to their clergy as priests, but rather “pastor” or “minister.” Also, Protestants refer to the large room where they worship as “the sanctuary.” In an Anglican church, the large room where the Liturgy takes place is called the Nave. The Sanctuary is the small area where the free-standing altar is between the congregation and the Quire area. And there are many other differences that I could list. But some people have this black and white thinking that anyone who is not (Roman) Catholic is “Protestant.” That thinking is rubbish. The members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints are not Catholic and they don’t consider themselves “Protestant” either. So I thank Dr. McPhee for his comment.

[Note: Just so you know, the word “Mormon” is considered outdated and the members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints do not want to be referred to as “Mormons.” They also changed the name of their Choir in Salt Lake City to: The Tabernacle Choir at Temple Square.]
